open is something you do. free is something you live. *

Hopefully this will be a useful page if anyone needs to find me (Dan Chudnov). I worked at the MIT Libraries as Systems Curator for the DSpace project from June 2001 through August 2002.

Today's design ethic is "2002 lazy professional retro après-pragmatique" with surreal garnish.

how to find me (until 2002-08-30):

in person: 10-423, the DSpace office, in the Barker Engineering Library
email: dchud at mit dot edu (try this first)
office phone: 617 452-2810 (then try this)

how to find me (after 2002-09):

email: dchud at umich dot edu

what i'm doing

I am looking for work.

Working at MIT was a great time, and I learned a great deal while helping to get DSpace built and installed at MIT. But I've been commuting weekly from Connecticut, and now it's time to be home full time again.

As for types of work, I am available to consult on design and implementation of software applications in libraries and library-like settings (e.g. digital libraries), especially where incorporating free/libre/open software. My most recent experience is implementing an OAIS-style institutional repository, and I am well-versed in a range of metadata issues. I have also consulted on more general issues of library technology planning and administration.

I can work on very short assignments (one day or less), or extended efforts (several months or more), on location occasionally, or entirely remotely. Whenever possible I prefer to take a train, or a car if necessary, to travel, as I dislike flying. I can be persuaded to fly, but not often.

If any of this interests you please don't hesitate to contact me. No project is too big, or too small, or far-fetched, or dull... I very much enjoy meeting and working with new people, and have had success consulting on a range of efforts in the past, so if it can be worked out, I'll probably be interested!

talks

I took a break from public speaking while working at MIT, but am again available to speak on free software and open source in libraries, on any of the projects I've worked on or written about, or broader topics in digital libraries, institutional repositories, etc.

Just drop a line if you're interested.
